Mayor Threatens Legal Action to Shut Down Exotica NY

SECAUCUS, N.J. - Mayor Dennis Elwell has announced that he intends to stop the Exotica NY show from taking place this coming weekend at the Meadowlands Expo Center.
According to NJ.com, the town plans to use zoning laws to shut down the three-day adult consumer expo.
"A pornographic convention where alcohol is served in violation of state law and at a facility adjacent to a nursery school and playground is not the sort of atmosphere I'll allow in Secaucus," Elwell said in a statement to the press.
Elwell and other town officials have called a press conference to address the situation Monday at noon at the Harmony Early Learning Center in Secaucus.
Many of the adult industry's biggest stars, studios and vendors are scheduled to attend Exotica NY, which is produced by Philadelphia-based Victory Tradeshow Management and sponsored by HotMovies.com.
AVN contacted Exotica organizer J. Handy, who provided the following statement:
“Victory Tradeshow Management has been made aware of the present situation surrounding our upcoming Exotica New York show to be held at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, New Jersey, September 12th through the 14th. We were notified that the owners and/or representatives of the Meadowlands Expo Center have been given notice of an intended hearing. Local officials are opposing the event and are seeking legal avenues in a last-minute attempt to block the show.
Our attorneys are in contact with the parties involved to make sure that Exotica New York complies with all applicable with all state and local laws, and any and all measures are being taken to make sure that the event takes place as scheduled. This consumer show is only accessible by those 18 years of age and older, and all exhibits are on the convention floor. We will keep updates as they become available on our corporate website, www.vtshows.com.”
The NJ.com report states that according to Elwell, one of the exhibits at the convention is called "violent dehumanization." That description came from a blurb for Joanna Angel's "Strip for Pain" show, which referenced "tongue-in-cheek violent dehumanization"; the event is no longer advertised on the Exotica NY site.
Victory Tradeshow Management has produced four successful Exotica conventions in Miami Beach since launching the event in 2005. This year's Miami Beach show drew a reported 22,000 attendees.
First announced in June, the Meadowlands event is the first Exotica convention to be promoted in the NY/NJ area.
Kudos to Mr. Handy for making the quick decision to find another venue to hold this convention instead of wasting his time trying to deal with these close minded individuals.

SECAUCUS, N.J. - AVN has learned that the Exotica NY show originally scheduled for this weekend at the Meadowlands Expo Center has been moved to a new venue due to legal issues with the town of Secaucus.
The show will now take place Friday - Sunday at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center at the Raritan Center in Edison, N.J. Show hours on Sunday have been changed to 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., but otherwise, all scheduling remains the same.
"Due to an issue with the liquor license at our previous venue, we wouldn’t have been able to present Exotica as it’s meant to be and as we planned it," said organizer J. Handy of Victory Tradeshow Management. "We decided to take an aggressive approach to make sure that this show happened as scheduled for the fans, our vendors and the stars. We have secured a bigger and better location for this weekend's Exotica NY show.”
Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell confirmed today at a press conference that the town had filed suit in State SUperior Court to shut the three-day expo down.
Elwell pointed to the exhibition of nudity at a venue with a liquor license as a violation of state law, whether or not alcohol is sold at the event. He also cited the Meadowlands Expo Center's proximity to a nursery school as a zoning violation.
A court hearing on the matter was set for Wednesday, but Victory Tradeshow Management decided to move the expo rather than compromise the presentation of the expo.
"We 100 percent support the right to freedom of speech and expression, and we weren't willing to back down on what we planned to do," Handy said. "So rather than produce a compromise that fit within their ideals of what is lewd or not lewd we decided to move the event no matter what the cost and show the officials who opposed Exotica that the show will go on as it was intended to be presented. Ticket sales are currently exploding."

Well I started writing this entry this morning and its now 2:30pm and Im just getting to post it. Got caught up in work then had to leave early to go get my Blood Test done and annual physical at the Dr.'s. then run over to the Auto service shop cause my front headlight was out, need that in so I dont get pulled over while driving home from the club. It wasnt the bulb it was the wire that was broken so now instead of a $12 bulb I have to pay for a $220 headlight assembly, what kinda shit is that. This is on top of the outrageous gas prices, the overall economy sucks. Im gonna start drilling for Oil in my own backyard soon.
